Club Raheens

Club Raheens - Why we need your help

Club Raheens was an initiative taken by Raheens GAA Club specifically to address the need to repay the capital loan taken out to purchase the new pitches, and to ensure that servicing the loan does not limit the day to day needs of the club.

We are now renewing our appeal to members and associates of the club, particularly those that weren't connected with the Club when the new pitches were purchased and developed, to subscribe to the ‘'Deed of Covenant'’ and become part of a community effort to finish the field development project. Our objective is to reach 100 subscribers over the coming weeks. We currently have 60 subscribers.

Running a club of this size while also repaying debt on the new pitches requires a lot of regular funding. It is also an opportunity for Raheens supporters to assist the club.

Joining Club Raheens is probably the most practical way someone can assist the club at this current time.

Please download the Deed of Covenant Standing Order form PDF and fill in and return to or phone any club contact who will collect it from you.

Background and the need for new pitches

The primary debt has been incurred in the purchase and development of the new pitches. This initiative commenced in 2005 and eventually came to fruition when the new full size and juvenile pitches opened in 2012.

The main driver for the development was the increase in the local population and the consequent increase in the number of players in the club, particularly under-age players and the planned expansion of the girls and ladies sections. This can best be gauged by the increase in the school going population;

We are delighted to say that the club has progressed well since the developments with our flagship team winning the Intermediate County final in 2017 and returning to the Senior ranks, the re-introduction of Senior Ladies football in the club, and the number of underage players increasing year on year. Currently the playing population of boys and girls between the ages of 4 and 20 years is 420. There has been considerable success at underage level in both boys and girls competitions, particularly our u14 boys who won the 'A' Féile competition in 2018.

The funding story so far - A lot done, but more to do.

The basic costs for the development were as follows:

                      Total cost Incurred                                         -                              €1,021,000

                      Repaid*                                                            -                              €   786,000

Outstanding Debt to be repaid                     -                              €   235,000
*repaid via lotto capital grant, club fundraising , donations & monthly repayments to date.

Outstanding Debt comprises (a) Bank loan of €185k (being repaid by Deed of Covenant contributions)
                                                                 (b) Members loan of €60k (being repaid from additional fundraising)

Through all your efforts and generosity over 77% of the debt is already paid off!

The club thanks all those who have contributed and continue to give their help.

Starting out with a debt of just over €1 million, an initial fundraising event took place in the Keadeen hotel in October 2007. This consisted of a 5 monthly draw and a ‘Deed of Covenant’ where people could make a monthly contribution. "The Deed" was very successful and remains the primary source of income to repay our existing bank debt of €185k. The members loan, which currently stands at €60k is being repaid from additional fundraising. Over €786k has been paid off the principal debt, which includes grants from GAA and lottery.

However, over time and with population movement and the deteriorating economic climate, the numbers subscribing to the ‘Deed of Covenant’ has declined to the point where making the monthly repayments is becoming very difficult and is using up funds which are needed elsewhere.

We still have 23% (or €235k) remaining which is a large debt. If we can hit our target and increase the number of Club Raheens members to 100 it is expected that we will be able to clear this debt within 5 years.
